PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd group chief executive and managing director Datuk Michael Tio is perhaps one of a few individuals who have come up with innovative ideas to make the office an ideal workplace.
His actions and projects had led to a conducive working environment and improved productivity among employees. Among the initiatives that have earned him accolades and awards are The Star Outstanding Business Awards 2012 (SOBA 2012) Grand Winner, Entrepreneur of The Year 2012 and Best Employer: Silver Award.
In keeping up with the time, he has made it compulsory for the company’s employees to have a Facebook (FB) account. They are required to be on FB during working hours. Employees are encouraged to set up a second FB account with the surname PkTian behind their FB account names.
The company has set up another group for all employees as the company’s intranet.
Tio and his employees are able to discuss information published on staff promotion, memos, and other announcements, all of which come within a speed of 30 seconds.
For instance if Tio were to post an entry at 9am to announce that staff will have a free lunch day, it will be organised within minutes, and arrangements will be made to provide lunch to all employees in the company’s branches across Malaysia.
The company also has a unique way of connecting with talents in the industry. It is by way of PKT Talent Hunter FB where the company locates and hunts for talent, which in effect, has brought the company’s cost of job-hunting to zero.
Once it has a vacancy, the company posts it and the applications keep coming in fast. The group has over 2,000 job applicants in waiting. With the long queue, and an overwhelming demand for jobs, PKT Logistics as a part of its CSR programme initiated a Career Day last year, where business associates, vendors and customers conducted interviews for PKT’s FB fans who needed jobs.
It was such a huge success that a second one was held last month with over 40 participating companies.
Tio has also instructed the company’s heads of departments to set up their own FB groups where he is administrator for their internal discussion. This has elevated the efficiency level of their individual teams and promotes better rapport amongst them.
A happy workforce is a productive workforce — with this in mind, Tio came up with an idea called Gymax Idol which is a combination of the popular American Idol and The Biggest Loser for staff to stay healthy and shed some pounds.
Staff who lose weight will be nominated by the trainers that the company hires. They would then become the “Idol” of the month.
A lucky draw is also held after six months to crown a winner to become the Gymax Idol where the prizes include a trip to Australia and London.
By encouraging employees to take care of their health, Tio said the company was seeing less medical certificates than before.
A job satisfaction survey is conducted every six months to see if employees are happy with their jobs and are on the same “wave length” as those in higher management.
This survey is the best way to quantify its level of excellence as a company. Employees are also tested on Tio’s vision and philosophy. The company’s FB fan page has over 17,000 fans with undergraduates being the majority. By 2015, the company believes it will have 17,000 sales people marketing for them as Tio’s objective is “to create an impression that will last forever”. - Star
